Premiere: CUT 989 – Skin (989)

After some months of being quiet we are now back with fresh material. New base and new music; To mark this come back we pick up a powerful, soul-cleansing track by the duo CUT 989, part of their new release Opinions [989-001].

Hailing out of Ōtautahi, Aotearoa (Christchurch, New Zealand) CUT 989 was born out of collaboration between techno producer James Barrett, who has signed to leading labels including Perc Trax, Mord, KAOS/OAKS, and South London Analogue Material as Keepsakes, and Henry Nicol, the Loghorn Breed member who’s work under Dog Power led to being signed to legendary Aotearoa indie label Flying Nun.

Beginning when Barrett re-located to Ōtautahi during the COVID-19 pandemic, CUT 989 represents a blend of the duo’s approaches and influences. They bring to the table a mutant style incorporating industrial, post-punk, techno, bass music, and experimental music constructed with both live and digital percussion, dark synth melodies, cynical lyricism and a range of studio production techniques. Musing on melancholic themes, mental health, and political frustration amidst the collapse of normality in civilisation in the modern era, CUT 989 provide music for the end times straight from an island at the end of the earth.

‘Skin’ is a mournful bass-heavy piece featuring tribalistic drumming, experimental percussions, gloomy synth work and lyrics pondering political betrayal.
