Interview: Gorgyra (Detriti)

Today we enter the captivating realm of Gorgyra, where pagan, horror, and folk blend seamlessly in their latest release “Hekate” on Detriti records, offering a truly distinctive and hypnotising experience. We had the opportunity to ask them some questions and share some of their material, eagerly anticipating the chance to experience their live performance soon.

  1. How was Gorgyra born?

Gorgyra was born in 2022 from some experiments between us Spenta Armaiti (santur and flute player) and Prometheus (electronic artist and producer). At some point we found some very inspiring sounds and from there we understood we could build our sonic microcosm.

  1. What are the main elements of your project?

It depends but generally we start from a melody and then we try to see which instruments can express better the spirit of that melody. Quite immediately we work on the sound recording production and usually in this phase we understand which further elements to introduce to support the atmosphere we want to create. We try to keep a minimal approach: we definitely think that the background space can help to feed specific tensions and sounds forms.

  1. Can you tell us about the creation of your album Hecate, released last November on Detriti?

Last summer we started to compose some melodies on the piano, just to have some drafts. Then we recorded these melodies using different instruments, without actually being sure whether all of them will be used in the end or not. At that point we focused on the production part, that plays a big role in our music. Effects and equalizations are used to create imaginary spaces where to place our melodies. It’s a little bit like a theater: the melodies are the characters, the production is the scenography.

  1. Your sound is awe-inspiring, imposing and at the same time soothing; What is your driving force whilst creating?

I would say this is the instinctual part of our creative process. Somehow we need to follow where the music takes us instead of trying to lead the process. We try to be simply channels and media between the chaos of the possibility and the manifestation of that potentiality. Indeed I forgot to say that in our creative process a big role is played by improvisation. Many arrangements – but also some melodies – are born during improvisation sessions.

  1. Is there any upcoming performance or work to announce?

Still not completely confirmed but very probably on 15th May we’ll play in Berlin at Loophole. You better check our Instagram page @gorgyra_ for the final details.
